What The Tech?! Fiber Optic Cable

Image
Replacing copper with fiber optic cable supercharged our capabilities. In our last What the Tech?! on satellite linking, while we felt we covered the brief on linking, there was some interesting statistics in regards to just how big a leap forward this was for international communications. We wanted to explore that some more as we felt it made for an interesting tale. So in today’s piece we’ll be looking at another great leap forward for communication by looking at Fiber Optic Cables. Fiber, was a much better transmission line, capable of carrying large quantities of data at speeds far superior to the copper cables of old. Explaining where Fiber fits into this journey helps understand the leap ahead these newer technologies provided. Today the world is a spaghetti of interconnected submarine cables. Source: Wikipedia The Beginning: The idea of transmission lines came far ahead of the development of fiber cables, with the first submarine cables laid in the 1850’s. These line...

What The Tech?! Satellite Linking

The development of Transponder carrying Satellites changed the way we consumed media. While we’ve all heard of the Space Race, which included the Mercury and Apollo projects the importance of the space race for Humanity is often quite misunderstood. The successful carrying of man into space required new materials, mathematics, design and communication methods to go with the all new Saturn V rocket which was scheduled to carry man to the moon. One of the most powerful man made objects, the Saturn V was an engineering marvel in it’s own right, but today we’ll be looking at where the space race began, with man made satellites orbiting the earth. While few readers are older enough to recall the Space Race, it’s pretty commonly known that it eventuated in what was known as the Sputnik crisis, as the USSR’s Sputnik became the first man made satellite to successfully orbit the earth. This leap forward marked one of the great successes of the space race and proved the viability of receiv...

Electronic Fingerprinting: Mobile Devices Behind The Shadows

Passive tracking is pervasive in today’s world. Let’s talk more about that. While we’ve all heard about web fingerprinting and had that moment where we wondered if our microphones were listening to us, most of that tracking revolves around the internet and being tracked by our patterns and the information we share via our social media and browsing habits. However there is another form of electronic surveillance that we experience many times each day, and our experience is that most people don’t give that a second thought. Today, we’re going to talk about how you can be betrayed by something you use every single day and what you can do to mitigate this should you wish to do so. You don’t get far as an Investigator without having a creative brain and finding ingenious ways to navigate problems while using technology to maintain an edge in the field. While this technology can be used in many situations sometimes legally speaking many tools are not suitable for the job, leading to ass...
